Bangkok Tackles Traffic Jams with AI and Technology

Traffic Jams

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reports significant progress in easing traffic congestion with the use of Area Traffic Control (ATC) technology and artificial intelligence.

Since its introduction in May 2023, the ATC system, implemented in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency, has optimized traffic signal timing based on real-time vehicle volume. Roads such as Pradiphat, Phahonyothin, Ratchawithi, and Rama VI have seen improved traffic flow—10% during peak hours and 30% during non-peak hours.

BMA spokesman Aekvarunyoo Amrapala highlighted plans to expand the ATC system to cover major thoroughfares like Sukhumvit and Rama IX roads, aiming for citywide implementation by 2026. AI-equipped CCTV cameras have also been deployed to monitor traffic violations and enforce regulations.

Despite technological advancements, driver behavior remains a key issue, with illegal stopping and parking contributing to congestion. The BMA has partnered with police to enforce rules using CCTV and has widened roads in several areas to improve traffic flow.

In 2023, traffic management tools implemented in 50 locations across the city reduced travel time by 25%. This year, the BMA plans to introduce these tools in over 70 additional high-traffic zones.
