Italian Cuisine’s UNESCO

A glamorous evening in Bangkok celebrates Italy’s bid for UNESCO recognition, highlighting its rich culinary traditions.

The Italian Embassy in Bangkok, along with the Italian Trade Agency, hosted an event to promote Italian cuisine’s candidacy for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. This follows the official nomination made by Italy’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Forestry (MASAF) and the Ministry of Culture (MIC) on 23 March 2023.

Held during the visit of Italy’s famed ship, the Amerigo Vespucci, the event was attended by various high-profile figures, including Mr. Francesco Lollobrigida, Italy’s Minister of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forestry, who helped spearhead the candidacy.

The celebration took place at the Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, home to the Italian restaurant “Salvia,” which holds the “Ospitalità Italiana” certification. Guests included Thai dignitaries, the diplomatic corps, food and wine experts, and influencers.

The evening highlighted key themes of Italian cuisine’s candidacy: tradition, variety, sustainability, and quality. Chef Roberto Parentela crafted a menu that explored regional specialties from across Italy, featuring fresh ingredients and time-honored recipes. Minister Lollobrigida also honored 15 chef ambassadors who have contributed to promoting Italian cuisine in Thailand.

A performance by tenor Waku Kanazawa and Thai pianist Rasikamol Sriyapong added a cultural touch to the event. Guests also enjoyed an exhibit showcasing premium Italian products, from pasta and truffles to wines and preserves, all available in Thailand.

The event is part of a global roadshow promoting Italy’s UNESCO candidacy, which has already visited cities like New York, Doha, and Tokyo. The roadshow is organized by MASAF, the Ministry of Culture, and other Italian institutions.

Italian Cuisine Week 2024, which runs from 16 to 22 November, will offer additional opportunities to explore Italy’s culinary heritage at top restaurants nationwide. For more information, visit the ITA Bangkok Facebook page.
