Thailand Signs Artemis Accords, Strengthening Global Space Exploration Ties

Thailand has officially joined the Artemis Accords, a global agreement promoting peaceful and cooperative space exploration. Approved by the Cabinet on October 29, 2024, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), under the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation (MHESI), will oversee Thailand’s participation as the primary signatory.

The signing ceremony took place at Anantara Siam Bangkok Hotel on December 16, 2024. Ms. Supamas Isarabhakdi, Minister of MHESI, presided over the event alongside Mr. Robert F. Godec, U.S. Ambassador to Thailand, Dr. Pakorn Apaphant, Executive Director of GISTDA, NASA representatives, and other agencies.

The Artemis Accords, launched on October 13, 2020, by eight founding nations, have now expanded to include 50 countries. Focused on fostering peaceful and sustainable use of outer space, the initiative is part of NASA’s Artemis Program, aimed at advancing lunar and space exploration.

Thailand is the second ASEAN nation, after Singapore, to sign the agreement. This partnership enhances Thailand’s access to advanced technologies, knowledge sharing, and collaboration with international space leaders. Officials aim to leverage this cooperation to bolster science, technology, and economic growth.

Minister Supamas emphasized that space technology remains a key government priority for both national development and global collaboration. Joining the Artemis Accords signifies Thailand’s commitment to engaging with cutting-edge advancements in space exploration.

Dr. Pakorn Apaphant highlighted the country’s new phase in space exploration, stressing the need to form expert teams to collaborate with NASA. GISTDA will propose the Artemis Thailand project to the National Space Policy Committee, paving the way for broader academic, industrial, and legal contributions from Thai sectors.

The partnership is expected to elevate Thailand’s capabilities in space technology and innovation, providing significant opportunities for researchers, entrepreneurs, and industries.
