Thai Schools Gain Autonomy Over Student Hairstyles After Policy Shift
Thailand’s Ministry of Education has officially revoked its regulation on student hairstyles in public schools, allowing each institution to establish its own guidelines. Ministry spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat confirmed the change on Saturday, highlighting that the announcement was published in the Royal Gazette last year. Formal notifications have since been distributed to schools across the country.
Schools are urged to consult teachers, parents, students, and school boards before finalizing their hairstyle policies. The ministry emphasized that the 2020 regulation on hairstyles was repealed on January 16 of the previous year.
Siripong clarified that traditional rules, such as ear-length or three-sided shaved hairstyles, are no longer mandatory. Schools now have full discretion over hairstyle standards and dress codes.
Encouraging open communication, the ministry advised schools to create spaces where students can voice their opinions constructively. Education Minister Permpoon Chidchob emphasized the importance of respecting students’ rights while promoting positive behavior through support programs offered by the Semapithak Centre. These programs focus on fostering discipline without imposing restrictions that may violate personal freedom.
The ministry expects schools to maintain policies that encourage respect, prevent bullying, and promote fairness. Siripong stressed the need to balance discipline with human rights to create a harmonious learning environment.
