Taiwan Excellence Inspires Change Through Waste-to-Resource Initiatives
Over 100 volunteers joined Taiwan Excellence’s effort to turn waste into resources, promoting sustainability and empowering communities.
Taiwan Excellence recently hosted its Day of Giving initiative, uniting over 100 volunteers to champion sustainability and environmental preservation. This corporate social responsibility (CSR) effort prioritized reducing waste, protecting water resources, and empowering communities with practical solutions to manage pollution.
Focusing on creative methods to transform waste into valuable resources, participants engaged in activities aimed at reducing pollution and fostering sustainable income for local communities. These initiatives also aligned with Taiwan Excellence’s commitment to annual CSR programs that positively impact society and the planet.
The Day of Giving project earned a carbon-neutral certification from the Greenhouse Gas Management Organisation. By incorporating energy-efficient practices and eco-friendly activities like the Water Dragon project (offsetting 15.39 kg of CO2 per participant) and a beach cleaning and marine waste upcycling initiative (offsetting 14.85 kg of CO2 per participant), the event successfully neutralized four tonnes of CO2 emissions.
Tackling Thailand’s Waste Crisis
Thailand generates an average of 27 million tonnes of waste annually, equating to about 1.14 kilograms per person daily. Taiwan Excellence addressed this challenge through two impactful initiatives: building Water Dragons to protect waterways and a beach cleaning and marine waste upcycling program.
Water Dragons for Cleaner Rivers
At Wat Jak Daeng Community in Samut Prakan, volunteers crafted floating trash traps, or Water Dragons, from recycled items like plastic bottles and foam. These devices capture trash from canals before it reaches rivers and oceans, intercepting up to 2,000 tonnes of waste annually, including over 98 million plastic bags. This system reduces marine debris by nearly 30%, offering a sustainable approach to combating water pollution.
Beach Cleaning and Upcycling in Chonburi
Volunteers also collaborated with Ban Amphoe’s community enterprise group in Chonburi Province to clean beaches and repurpose collected waste. They learned to transform materials like plastic bottle caps, glass bottles, and other debris into useful products such as plant pots, coasters, and floor tiles. Some waste was even processed into oil. This approach not only conserves marine life but also creates income opportunities for locals.
Taiwan Excellence continues to lead by example, demonstrating how community-driven efforts and innovative solutions can tackle pressing environmental challenges while fostering sustainable practices.
