Schools Allowed to Shift Online During Severe Air Pollution

Schools Allowed to Shift Online

Schools can transition to online classes when fine dust pollution reaches dangerous levels, according to the Education Ministry.

On Tuesday, Education Ministry spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat stated that Minister Permpoon Chidchob has urged schools to adopt measures to safeguard students affected by the hazardous PM2.5 haze and colder weather.

Siripong noted that cool temperatures and wind conditions often trap fine dust particles, significantly raising pollution levels. This poses serious health risks for students, including respiratory issues, red eyes, fever, and sleep disturbances, all of which can hinder their learning capabilities.

Steps to Mitigate Pollution Impact

To reduce exposure to pollution, schools have been instructed to suspend outdoor activities such as morning assemblies, sports, and scout training. Schools in highly polluted areas are encouraged to hold online classes or take other necessary steps to protect students.

Some schools have taken proactive measures by installing dust control systems, ventilation fans, and water sprays. They are also working to raise awareness among students about the health risks associated with air pollution.

“The goal is to ensure students can continue learning in safer environments despite the ongoing pollution crisis,” said Siripong.

Bangkok’s Pollution Levels and Proposed Solutions

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported that 70 areas in the city exceeded the safety threshold of 37.5 µg/m³ on Tuesday. Deputy Democrat Party leader Suchatchavee Suwansawas suggested designating a low-emission zone (LEZ) across 16 central districts, covering approximately 130 square kilometers.

He proposed charging drivers of fossil-fuel vehicles to enter these zones while exempting electric vehicles. Suchatchavee believes this policy could lead to cleaner air in the city.
