Mitr Phol Promotes Sustainable Sugarcane Harvesting with Green Campaign
Empowering farmers with extra income while driving eco-friendly agriculture and renewable energy solutions.
Mitr Phol Group, a leader in sustainable agriculture, continues its commitment to green sugarcane harvesting through its “Let’s Green the Sugarcane” initiative. The campaign, now in its seventh year, focuses on sustainable practices while offering cane growers additional income opportunities.
For the 2024/2025 milling season starting in December, the company will purchase 700,000 tons of sugarcane leaves at 900 baht per ton. These leaves will primarily be used as biomass fuel to reduce reliance on fossil fuels, with some repurposed as organic mulch to enhance soil health.
Chairman Buntoeng Vongkusolkit emphasized Mitr Phol’s dedication to helping farmers adopt modern harvesting methods that are both cost-effective and environmentally friendly. He highlighted the role of the “Mitr Phol ModernFarm” initiative in improving farming efficiency while preserving natural resources.
Over the last decade, this initiative has provided farmers with advanced agricultural techniques covering every stage of the sugarcane lifecycle, from soil preparation to harvesting. The company has bought over 1.7 million tons of sugarcane leaves, contributing more than 2.5 billion baht to farmers’ incomes.
Burning agricultural waste, a major cause of air pollution, remains a challenge in Thailand. Mitr Phol collaborates with government agencies, private companies, and academic institutions, including Kalasin University, to promote non-burning methods and improve fire prevention. These efforts also include projects with local authorities in Suphan Buri to address this issue.
Through the “Let’s Green the Sugarcane” campaign, Mitr Phol aims to increase awareness of the benefits of sustainable harvesting. This effort aligns with the company’s “Mitr Phol Triple Grows” strategy, which integrates economic, environmental, and social goals to deliver long-term value to stakeholders.
