One of Bach’s most iconic masterpieces, the Goldberg Variations (BWV 988), originally composed in 1741 for harpsichord, will be brought to life in a fresh new form. In 1984, violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky reimagined the Goldberg Variations for string trio, offering a new voice to this legendary work while retaining its emotional depth and complexity.
Bach composed the Variations as the final part of his Clavier-Übung series, with a popular but unverified story suggesting they were commissioned by Count Kaiserling to help his insomnia. Since its inception, the work has transcended its origins and is now regarded as a cornerstone of keyboard music.
Sitkovetsky’s arrangement, made in honor of Bach’s 300th birthday, transforms the Goldberg Variations for string trio, enhancing its universality and emotional resonance. This adaptation, performed frequently by ensembles worldwide, offers a fresh interpretation of Bach’s genius.
The Structure of the Goldberg Variations:
- Aria: A serene opening theme that grounds the work.
- Variations: Thirty variations, each built on the Aria’s bass line and harmonic structure.
- Every third variation is a canon, advancing by intervals (unison, second, third, etc.).
- Non-canonic variations explore dance forms, keyboard techniques, and musical textures.
Musical Highlights:
- Aria: The meditative melody setting the tone for the entire piece.
- Variation 5: A dazzling, toccata-like display of virtuosic string interplay.
- Variation 15: A moving canon at the fifth, in a poignant minor key.
- Variation 25: Known as the “black pearl,” this emotionally intense variation is marked by chromaticism.
- Variation 30 (Quodlibet): A playful and light-hearted finale that combines folk tunes before returning to the Aria.
The Significance of Sitkovetsky’s Arrangement
Sitkovetsky’s string trio version brings out the rich counterpoint and emotional range of Bach’s work. The violin, viola, and cello converse intimately, illuminating the complexities of the music while adding a new depth that makes it a communal chamber experience. This arrangement elevates the Goldberg Variations as a timeless gem that seamlessly bridges the world of solo keyboard music with the spirit of chamber music.
