Government Examines Ways to Lower Electricity Costs

Ways to Lower Electricity Costs

Finance Minister Responds to Thaksin’s Proposal

The government is exploring options to reduce electricity prices, aligning with former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s recent proposal.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira stated on Wednesday that efforts are underway to cut power bills below 4 baht per unit, addressing high living costs. This follows Thaksin’s remarks to voters in Chiang Rai, suggesting electricity rates could drop to 3.70 baht per unit later this year.

Currently, household electricity rates stand at 4.15 baht per unit and will remain unchanged until the end of April. Mr. Pichai emphasized that reducing rates aligns with the government’s policy to ease financial burdens on citizens.

While discussing possible measures, Mr. Pichai refrained from confirming specifics, such as tax adjustments. He added that lowering electricity costs may not solely rely on government financial aid.

There is speculation that cutting petroleum taxes—potentially affecting gas prices used in electricity generation—might be considered. However, the Finance Ministry has not yet reviewed these details.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed confidence that reducing electricity rates to 3.70 baht per unit is achievable and reaffirmed it as a government priority.
