Community and corporate efforts lead to significant waste reduction while supporting mangrove conservation in Rayong.

Dow Thailand Group’s second annual “Save the Mangroves, Reduce Waste” campaign has reinforced its commitment to sustainability. The initiative, a collaboration with the Thailand Mangrove Alliance and the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, mobilized more than 400 volunteers, government agencies, and Dow employees to clean mangrove areas in Rayong Province.

From June to November 2024, six cleanup events were held at sites like Prasae Estuary, Klaeng District, and Laem Charoen Beach’s Kaoyod fishery group. The campaign removed over 2,265 kilograms of waste, including recyclable materials and plastics, which were either upcycled or recycled into useful products, generating income for local communities. Non-recyclable waste was properly handled by local authorities.

Residual waste levels in 2024 dropped by more than 30% compared to the previous year. This improvement reflects better waste-sorting habits among communities, said Nattapong Jirawatthanavarakul, Director of Public and Community Affairs at Dow Thailand. He emphasized Dow’s efforts to promote waste segregation and integrate recyclables into a circular economy, reducing environmental impacts.

Dow Thailand highlights mangroves’ importance in addressing climate change. These ecosystems can store carbon more efficiently than land-based forests and act as natural shields against environmental threats. Conservation efforts since 2009 have involved Dow employees, local communities, and partners, aligning with the company’s goals for environmental restoration and sustainability.

The campaign also showcased the economic potential of mangroves by promoting sustainable tourism opportunities while enhancing community engagement and environmental resilience.
