Bangchak and CPF Partner to Launch Sustainable Aviation Fuel Initiative

Bangkok, October 28, 2024Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited (Bangchak) and Charoen Pokphand Foods Public Company Limited (CPF) have officially signed a business sustainability cooperation agreement to produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from used cooking oil. The agreement, endorsed by Bangchak’s Group CEO Mr. Chaiwat Kovavisarach and CPF’s CEO Mr. Prasit Boondoungprasert, marks a significant step toward sustainable energy and waste management.

The collaboration centers on transforming used cooking oil and fats from CPF’s food production and wastewater treatment facilities into SAF through BSGF, a Bangchak affiliate. Bangchak’s Mr. Kovavisarach remarked, “Partnering with CPF on the ‘Fry to Fly’ initiative reinforces our commitment to ESG principles and a sustainable, circular economy. This joint effort aims to positively impact both business operations and environmental health.”

This partnership also broadens sustainability efforts through CPF’s restaurant brands like Chester’s, Five Star, Iron Pan, and Hainanese Chicken Rice, which participate in the “No Repeat Frying” and “No Fry Left Behind” initiatives. Since 2022, BSGF has collaborated with Thailand’s Department of Health to create a network for collecting used cooking oil, now engaging over 800 public and private locations nationwide. By converting this oil into SAF, the partnership aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel.

CPF CEO Mr. Boondoungprasert highlighted that this partnership aligns with CPF’s “Sustainovation” approach, using innovation for food security and sustainable practices. “By repurposing CPF’s used cooking oil and fats into SAF, we maximize resource efficiency and minimize environmental impact,” he stated, adding that expansion into CPF’s international operations is a future possibility.

As part of Bangchak’s broader climate strategy, the SAF production unit, now over 70% complete at Bangchak’s Phra Khanong Refinery, will launch production in early Q2 of 2025, initially targeting a capacity of 1 million liters per day. This initiative underscores both companies’ commitment to sustainable business practices and effective climate action.
